Mercedes Confidence in Lithium Power Packs
April 4, 2008 |
Mercedes have been building on exciting news that they will be first in the US with lithium power-packed electric hybrid cars. The German/ Chrysler giants are hoping to now have small, efficient electric cars in the US market in 2010.

The new cars are predicted to be small, light and versatile with around 80 miles of battery powered range which is impressive and plentiful for most journeys. The lithium batteries used are expected to be only around ‘backpack’ size and could just be the start of the new craze for eco-manufacturers. Lithium batteries have been a goal for many designers for a long time as they are small, relatively cheap to produce and long life. If manufacturers such as Mercedes are starting to make breakthroughs with lithium batteries (as they claim) then this can only be good news as other companies will be close behind.
Many commentators have been looking on lithium-hybrid power as the next phase in the development of hybrid technology - a necessary step in moving forward sustainable car design. If we really are as close as a couple of years from seeing this technology mass-marketed in the US, then these are exciting times.
