BMW X6 Hybrid in 2009?
April 15, 2008 |
Rumours have been circulating for some time about the possible future of the new BMW X6’s engine range. Amongst plentiful speculation that the sports-SUV-coupe’s range will be seeing the addition of a diesel power unit in 2009, it is now looking almost certain that the BMW X6 will be available as.
Now, the BMW X6 is a real love it / hate it car. Like an X5 on steroids, the current range has options like 21″ alloys, a 4.4 litre V8, pumping out 400 horsepower and looks that will turn heads to even the most bland suburban driveway. Ok, so the X6 is aimed at the driver who wishes to make a statement with what they drive - regardless of whether in a positive or negative manner. Why introduce a hybrid power system to such a car?

Well, I’m afraid that in a machine like this, which was born to do little more than go from wealthy suburb to wealthy suburb, to country club to gym, etc.. (and look damn trendy doing it) I can see only one real reason. The buyer of an X6 is certainly very unlikely to be interested in the possibility of saving a few $ on gas by going hybrid (given likely retail prices), so what does that leave? Cache, fashion sense, street cred, guilty conscience.. call it what you will. The ugly truth is that a hybrid X6 will be aimed firmly at the ‘fashion’ buyer out there who not only wants a big bold BMW in their drive, they want a semi-green power plant under the bonnet to keep them cool and make them even more of a talking point.
Look at it this way - in the terms of human behaviour the X6 is the guy who takes his female friends small dog / baby (delete as appropriate) to the park on Saturday. Not because he wants to give said dog / child a good day out, but just as a way to pick up girls!
